Elizabeth Ramsay attends the world renowned Cerssaie show.

Nassau Tile rebranded and celebrated 85 years

2009

Showroom floor renovated to feature first 24” x 48” Format tile from Atlas Concorde.

 

2007

Elizabeth Ramsay, Jose’s daughter, joined the company. Continuing the tradition, Elizabeth attends Coverings.

2003

Nassau Tile participated in the 2003 Bahamas Home & Builders Show held at the Radisson Cable Beach Hotel. The highlight at the booth was the presentation of the Positano wall series from Novabell in Italy which became a best seller.

Nassau Tile hosted Janet Carter, leading American colour and design consultant, to present the seminar “Trends, Colours and Tile Interiors and Exteriors”. Held at the British Colonial Hilton Ms Carter revealed to an audience of architects, designers, realtors and home-owners the trends in tile style and colours.

On the occasion of its 70th year in business Nassau Tile is featured in US trade magazine “Tile & Decorative Surfaces” with a 4 page article with photographs. In the same year the “TileLetter” of the US National Tile Contractors Association highlights NassauTile’s anniversary.

Nassau Tile for the 25th anniversary of Bahamian Independence commissioned Bahamian ceramic artist Jessica Colebrooke to produce a limited series of 25 tiles with the Bahamian flag and Coat-of-arms as main elements .All proceeds were donated to the Boys and Girls Scouts of the Bahamas.

Floor Gres, in coordination with Nassau Tile, convenes its North American Distributors’ Meeting at the Nassau Marriott Resort & Crystal Palace Casino in Nassau. 40 US distributors gathered to preview for the first time the exclusive preview of the manufacturer’s new porcelain line with a French limestone look.

Nassau Tile converts attic space into new offices with full body polished porcelain floor tiles from Floor Gres, Italy.

Nassau Tile celebrates 65 years in business with a live radio broadcast from showroom with representatives from major suppliers attending.

During the 60th anniversary of Nassau Tile’s business, Jack Vogel, President of the International Council of the Ceramic Tile Distributors Association of America, made an official visit and congratulated management and staff.

In the late 80’s the best selling exterior floor tile was the Porto Antik 6×8 from German manufacturer Buchtal.

Nassau Tile introduces from Italy bathroom fixtures including the ever increasing popular pedestal sinks specially for powder rooms.

Renovated showroom floor at Nassau Tile features a large format 24×24 tile from Germany, an unusual size for the time when the best selling size was 12×12.

Nassau Tile’s showroom undergoes major renovation and doubling in size to effectively display expanded product lines to include not only tiles from Italy, Spain and US but also Mexico, Colombia, Korea, Japan and Germany.

Nassau Tile expands and renovates warehouse to accommodate increasing level of imports.

The Woman ’83 Exhibition at the Britannia Beach Hotel on Paradise Island features a booth from Nassau Tile highlighting the popularity of tiles from the Italian manufacturer Cerim.

The popularity of Italian patterned 8×8 ceramic floor tiles reached its peak with best selling styles like the “Odessa 8×8”.

Nassau Tile launches series of TV ads highlighting popular Italian 8×8 patterned floor tiles.The fact of only seeing legs of model with slippers crossing over room of tiles becomes a distinctive feature of campaign.

The November 1981 edition of the Italian trade magazine Ceramica Per L’Edilizia International features article on Nassau Tile. The article highlights with photographs recent tile installations supplied by Nassau Tile and Christmas Window Displays.

At the Annual Convention of the Ceramic Tile Distributors of America held in Washington D.C. Nassau Tile received honorable mention for the innovation in design and manufacturer promotion with its window displays.

After returning from first trip to Italian tile exhibition Jose enters Christmas Window Display contest, with a display inspired on the baptismal font in St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. Nassau Tile wins the contest for a fourth time following wins in 1975, 1976 and 1977.

Sales of mosaic tile from Korea and Japan increase and are featured in the Christmas Window display which gains third win for Nassau Tile in the Guardian’s Christmas Window Contest.

Nassau Tile begins importing tiles from Italy, originally 6×6 wall tile continuing with 8×8 floor tile.

Nassau Tile’s Christmas window display wins for the first time the Nassau Guardian’s Christmas Window Contest.

After John’s passing in 1974 his son, Jose Gomez, becomes responsible for the company and injects new energy into business beginning with introduction of first ever logo for company.

The 60’s popular culture influences Nassau Tile’s new cement tile designs in 12×12 size, larger than the more popular 8×8.

Nassau Tile commences the manufacturing of decorative cement blocks for use in building partitions and tops of perimeter walls.

1960

Nassau Tile expanded its offerings of wall tile by importing from the H&R Johnson Company in the UK the especially popular 4 ¼” x 4 ¼”.

1958

Nassau Tile expanded its offerings of wall tile by importing from the H&R Johnson Company in the UK the especially popular 4 ¼” x 4 ¼”.

1957

Nassau Tile installs the terrazzo flooring at the new international airport at Windsor Field in Nassau, a major recognition for the company’s successful introduction of terrazzo to its products line.

1952

Nassau Tile moved to its current location on Dowdeswell Street. 

1944

John completes construction of the Gomez Building on East Bay Street in which he fully incorporates the cement tiles Nassau Tile manufactures and imported Spanish ceramic tile, especially used in the elaborate front staircase.

1940

From 1936 and throughout the 40’s Nassau Tile was located on Bay Street on the property site of Union Dock opposite the current Malcolm Building Police Station.

1933

Nassau Tile begins importing from Valencia, Spain ceramic wall tiles for bathrooms, including colorful inserts.

1930

John Gomez started Nassau Tile as a manufacturing facility for cement tile floors on Dunmore Lane.

1929

He was also the contractor for the Collins House in 1929 and from that project saw a need for a tile factory in the Bahamas.

1926

John, originally a carpenter by trade, begins importing and manufacturing furniture primarily using Cuban mahogany.

Originally from Galicia in the northwest of Spain, John Gomez came to Nassau to help rebuild the British Colonial Hotel which had been destroyed by a fire.
